SIU student earns degree at age 72, keeping a promise he made to mom
Perseverance is in Earl Henderson’s DNA. That "never-give-up" attitude will be rewarded when the 72-year-old man from Virginia Beach, Virginia, receives his Southern Illinois University Carbondale bachelor's degree in organizational learning, innovation and development (OLID).
Congratulations to the students, graduates, and faculty of the Organizational Learning, Innovation, and Development program within the School of Education! At the annual American Association of Adult and Continuing Education conference, held in October in Nevada, the following individuals were honored with multiple awards from the Commission of Workforce and Professional Development (CWPD) and the Commission of Professors of Adult Education (CPAE) .

What’s in a Name: Wham Education Building
Connected to the waist of Pulliam Hall is a building that houses a history of education. As with most things rich in history, there is more than meets the eye.
Still a muse of inspiration, the Wham Education Building is the location of a new Welcome Center, has inspired puns through campus culture, and is named in the spirit of George D. Wham who was dean of faculty after a 32-year tenure at SIUC.
SIU Graduate Named 2024 Illinois Principal of the Year
Natalie Page is a 2014 graduate of SIU with a Master of Science degree in Educational Administration.
OLID Doctoral Student Presented Award
Dr. Ahmed Al-Asfour and Radia Lakhssassi, OLID doctoral student, presented "Exploring Employee Performance, Well-being, and Productivity within a four-day workweek in Modern Organizations" during the Academy of Human Resource Development conference in Arlington, VA on February 23, 2024.
SIU Researchers Explore Virtual Training to Foster Faster, Better Decisions in Sports
Split-second decisions frequently determine the outcome of a game, a medical procedure, a military battle or a law enforcement situation. Scott Boatright, a doctoral candidate at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is conducting research to see if people can train with simulation and extended reality to make judgments more quickly and effectively. His work has already garnered national recognition along with a $10,000 scholarship from the National Training and Simulation Association (NTSA).
OLID Doctoral Candidates Give Presentation at AAACE
School of Education doctoral candidates Dauran McNeil, Lyle Gross, Sarah Kroenlein, and Val Codi (Organizational Learning Innovation and Development program) gave a presentation titled, "Are We Meeting The Needs of The Adult Learners? Application of the ASSURE Model" at the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) annual meeting in Lexington, KY earlier this month. Congratulations to all!
Cheng-Yao Lin Selected as a Fulbright Mentor
Cheng-Yao Lin, professor and coordinator of the elementary education program in the School of Education, was selected last month as a Fulbright mentor by the United States Department of State for the 2023-2024 academic year. He will be assisting new Fulbright scholars from Taiwan with advice, support and networking as they come to the United States for a year to serve as scholars at universities and colleges.
Online Teaching Degree Program to Address Teacher Shortage
Southern Illinois University Carbondale is launching a new online undergraduate program in elementary education this fall for working professionals, as part of its efforts to do everything possible to address teacher shortages. Also new this fall is an online teaching degree program in Organizational Learning, Innovation, and Development (formerly Workforce Education and Development).
Saluki Pride: Stacy Thompson
Stacy Thompson wears many hats as professor and associate dean of undergraduate studies and curriculum for the School of Education, and does so admirably, colleagues say. She teaches, researches, leads the school’s undergraduate programs, works with parents, nurtures partnerships with local schools and regional offices of education, has served on the board of the Illinois Council on Family Relations since 2016 and handles a variety of other duties.
Filling in the Gaps for Early Childhood Education
School officials continue working to fill needed positions, and the areas in early childhood education are one of their top priorities.
