This page provides a comprehensive guide to the resources, opportunities, and support services available to you as a current student. Our award-winning faculty and dedicated staff are here to challenge and empower you to become an impactful and compassionate educator.
Academic Excellence
Undergraduate and Graduate Programs
The School of Education offers a wide array of programs for aspiring and experienced educators, including 14 undergraduate majors and numerous master's and doctoral degrees. Whether you are pursuing your Professional Educator's License in Illinois or seeking advanced administrative credentials, our programs are designed to provide both strong academic foundations and essential hands-on field experience.
Academic Advising
Our academic advisors are your most valuable resource for navigating your degree path.
- Undergraduate Advising: Students in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, and Special Education can connect with Scott Johnson in Wham 122.
- Specialized Education: For those in Biological Sciences Education, English Education, or other specialized areas, Naishon Patterson is your go-to advisor.
- Online and Off-Campus Programs: Shannon Schroeder is available to assist students in these pathways.
The Center for Learning Support Services (CLSS)
Located on the 7th floor of Morris Library, CLSS offers free tutoring, academic coaching, and test preparation workshops for all students.
More than just books, the library provides program-specific liaisons, a Family-Friendly Study Room, and the Writing Center, which offers free writing assistance to help you develop your skills at any stage of the writing process.
This is SIU's learning management system (LMS), which you may know as MyCourses. It is essential for accessing course materials, submitting assignments, and communicating with your instructors.
Real-World Experience and Clinical Practice
Clinical Preparation from Day One
At SIU, you get hands-on experience in public school classrooms from your very first semester. Our program is intentionally structured to provide you with a well-rounded clinical preparation that exposes you to diverse classrooms and student populations.
- Clinical Resources: The Teacher Education Program (TEP) offers a variety of resources to support your clinical journey, including a Clinical Preparation Handbook and a directory of clinical sites.
- Student Teaching: Your final semester culminates in a full-time student teaching experience. To qualify, you must maintain a 2.75 GPA, pass your Illinois content tests, and complete a background check, among other requirements.
Internships and Micro-Internships
For paid experience, consider a short-term Micro-Internship through the Parker Dewey platform, which is available year-round. You can also earn six internship credits through the SIUC Global Career Accelerator, an online program connecting students with real-world projects.
Professional and Community Engagement
Joining a student organization is a great way to connect with peers and build skills. Options for School of Education students include the Elementary Education Student Organization (EESO), and the Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC).
Volunteerism and Service Learning
The Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism (CSLV) provides opportunities for students to volunteer and engage with the community.
Career Development and Post-Graduation Support
The CDC helps students and recent alumni with career planning. They offer services like career advisement, exploring major options, and help with resumes and interviewing. You can schedule appointments through Hire a Saluki and access a Professional Clothing Closet for free attire.
Graduate Opportunities
Funding options for graduate students include Assistantships, Fellowships, and Internships. Contact the School of Education for more information.
Comprehensive Student Wellness and Support
Health and Wellness
Access healthcare at the Student Health Center and mental health services at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).
Student Life and Campus Resources
Resources are available for non-traditional students (NTSS), students with disabilities (OAA), and those in distress (Saluki Cares). The Saluki Food Pantry assists with food insecurity, and SalukiTech provides tech support.
